EGON FERNANDO CARLOS PUTZ (BERLIN,
DECEMBER 11, 1887 – ?)
Born in Berlin in 1887, the Spanish pianist and
composer, Egon Pütz, trained at the Paris Conservatoire and studied with Raoul
Pugno and Teresa Carreño. winning First Prize for piano. He first travelled to
the United States in late 1910, in company with the French bass, Georges
Bourgeois, who was appearing at the Metropolitan Opera House in the world
première of Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West. In the following year Pütz became
an American citizen, and he soon made a name for himself in New York, performing
at Aeolian Hall and elsewhere. His talents were spotted by the Aeolian Company,
and he joined them as a recording artist for the new Metro-Art series of
hand-played rolls. According to his biography in the 1927 Duo-Art Catalogue, he
had the unique distinction of being the first person to record an Aeolian
hand-played music roll (which is in fact incorrect), and he also took part in
Aeolian Hall concerts as a pianolist.
