MARIA CARRERAS (ITALY, FEBRUARY 19, 1877 – NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA, APRIL 15, 1966)

 

 

 

 

The Italian-born American pianist, Maria Carreras, studied at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Giovanni Sgambati and with Ferruccio Busoni. In 1914, for the 10th anniversary of the death of Anton Rubinstein, Maria Carreras was invited to perform in Russia. She was popular in the 1910’s and 1920’s. She made her New York debut in 1923. She played works by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, L.v. Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Ferruccio Busoni. Critics described her as “a strong and powerful personality” and “interpretative authority” (NY Herald Tribune). She was also the teacher of succesul concert pianists. She left many recordings in piano rolls. On April 16, 1933, she recorded the Finale of L.v. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with Mishel Piastro (violin), Alfred Wallenstein (cello) and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Arturo Toscanini (LP American Arturo Toscanini Society).
