Rosalie Paula
Stebel, known professionally as Paula Stebel, was born on April 17, 1885, in
Offenburg. Little is known about her early years, but her extraordinary talent
came to light during her piano studies at the Grand Ducal Conservatory in
Karlsruhe, where she completed her doctorate with distinction. Her outstanding
abilities earned her a summa cum laude degree and led to her appointment as a
teacher in the master class at the Conservatory in Frankfurt.
Her concert tours
took her across Germany and abroad, where she was widely acclaimed and
celebrated as “the second Clara Schumann.”
However, her
flourishing career was abruptly interrupted by the outbreak of World War I.
During the war, Paula Stebel worked selflessly as a Red Cross nurse in
Frankfurt and later as an operating room nurse in Dortmund during the immediate
post-war period.
After a
six-year hiatus, she resumed her career in 1920, occasionally performing as a
pianist. Despite her contemporary acclaim, Paula Stebel remains largely
forgotten today.
She spent her
final years in Tübingen, where she passed away on March 26, 1932, at the age of
just 46.
